Department of Education RPED funds were awarded to the University of Pittsburgh to establish the Pitt PRSSIM Project through the Office of the Provost. This funding was allocated to directly benefit rural students in their internship endeavors, one of the grant's main objectives. Funding became available to regional campus partners and students resulting in the Pitt PRSSIM Project being able to offer students $4,000 per internship to support experiences that would otherwise be unpaid. Within a few weeks’ time, the Pitt-Greensburg Career Services office was able to identify and refer students who we were aware of that were eligible, and had unpaid experiences lined up. We are excited to share 9 of the 13 available regional spots for funding have been filled with Greensburg campus students.

One full year of internship site visits occurred, after launching these last spring term (2024). Students were supported by a visit from our Internship Coordinator, Kristen Stratton. Kristen was able to meet with each student’s site supervisor, tour the site, and learn directly from each student about their experience and how their internship helped develop or enhance both technical and career readiness skills. Site visits included: 84 Lumber Headquarters, Borough of Swissvale via The Local Government Academy, City of Greensburg,  OPST & Associates, Inc, Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office, Pitt-Greensburg Athletics, Pitt-Greensburg Admissions, Greensburg Community Development Corporation and Authentic Perspectives.

This event was held to provide other students with information on how they found their internship, ways to build their resume, the importance of networking, and all the ways that students benefit from internships. This event was exciting for their office, in that it had been a planned event halted at the onset of the pandemic.
