Message from the President
“Fred Rogers often told this story about when he was a boy and would see scary things on the news: ‘My mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’ To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.’”
What a year 2020 has been. Some of us have become virtual elementary school teachers in our living rooms while others have made some of the most non-conducive work environments into impressive home offices. We are pretty much living in a different world and have been challenged to redefine what the phrase “work-life balance” means. In addition to managing the personal and logistical pieces of a pandemic, we have also continued to be the helpers in our profession. We have been tasked to help our students and alumni navigate their career and professional development in an economic downturn. And although these tasks have required lots of trial, error, and flexibility, we have risen to the task. We have adjusted our programs and services to be delivered online and remain impactful. We have transitioned our career fairs to serve our students and employers in a virtual format. We have become experts on all things Zoom, Teams, and Webex. We have made all of these things happen and in just over six months. I think we deserve a round of applause.
As we continue to give to our loved ones, our communities, and our students, it is important to make sure that we are filling our own cups as well. PennACE has always been a great organization to gain support from colleagues across the state. I encourage all of you to stay involved and take advantage of the opportunities that are available. Whether that is posing a questions to the group on our e-list, participating in a professional development event, sharing your voice on a committee, or attending our annual conference, it is vital that we continue to find ways to recharge, network, and enhance our own professional growth.
If you are looking for ways to get involved or have questions about our organization, please do not hesitate to contact me or another member of the executive board. I hope you all stay safe, healthy, and encouraged.
All my best,
Lesli Somerset Talley
